Chapter 8
Minutes after walking through the gates of Silver Dollar City, Tia made good on her vow.
âThis tastes incredible,â she said between the wads of cotton candy she continued to cram into her mouth. She clutched the mass of spun sugar in one hand and balanced what was billed as a âmountain-sizeâ soft pretzel in the other.
âWant a bite?â She offered both the sweet and the savory treats up to Ethan so he could take his pick.
He gave her the look.
The one he wore when he talked about Carol, an oh-so-familiar expression reeking of I know whatâs best. What a surprise, Tia thought.
âNo, thanks,â he said predictably, the furrows deepening in his disapproving frown.
Here we go, Tia thought, feeling pinpricks of irritation. The attractions surrounding them in the 1880s-themed Ozark Mountains amusement park paled in comparison to the thrill ride Ethan Wright had put her emotions through in the short time sheâd known him.
After an innocent brush of his hand against hers, all she could do was hold on tight as her entire being tingled with longing. His sense of humor could suddenly launch her into a fit of giggles, and then in a sudden twist, he could say something to send her plunging into the depths of annoyance.
Like now.
âAre you sure you want to stuff yourself with that crap?â Ethan examined the junk food in her hands.
Tia took a defiant bite out of the mustard-slathered soft pretzel. âYup. And Iâm just as certain about the hot dogs, kettle corn and red-velvet funnel cake I plan to eat... Hold on.â
She handed him the pretzel and pulled a park map out from the back pocket of her skirt.
âRight after I ride the Thunderation coaster,â she said. âSays here itâs a runaway mine train that provides riders with a scenic view of the Ozarks before an eighty-one-foot drop at forty-eight miles an hour and then a race through an underground tunnel.â
Tia shoved the map back into her pocket, and Ethan returned her jumbo pretzel. To his credit, he let the subject of her food choices drop, but not his attempts to curb her amusement-park buzz.
âWeâre not here to have fun.â He brought a hand to his face to shield his eyes against the sun as he looked around them. âYouâre supposed to be helping me find my grandmother.â
Tia shook her head. âNo, sir.â She pointed her half-eaten cotton candy at his chest. âYouâre the one hunting down Carol.â
And good luck to him, Tia mused. Sheâd finally been able to reach Carol when theyâd stopped back at the rest stop. Her friend and Glenn had been standing in line for tickets to a matinee performance of A Tribute to Motown on the other side of the resort town. They didnât plan to scratch the Outlaw Run roller coaster off the bucket list until later during the parkâs special senior-citizen discount night.
âBut...â Ethan began.
âBut nothing. Your ultimatum terms were I accompany you to help convince her to return home,â Tia said. âWhen you find Carol, Iâll see what I can do.
